The National Museum is the Sultanate of Oman’s premier cultural landmark, dedicated to showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Oman, from the earliest human presence in the country to the present day. Through this museum, we look forward to our promising future.
The National Museum was established by Royal Decree No. 62/2013, issued on 16 Muharram 1435 AH, corresponding to 20 November 2013 AD. It thus acquired a legal personality, in accordance with the internationally recognized experiences and standards for classifying prestigious museums.
The museum aims to achieve its educational, cultural, and humanitarian mission by instilling noble Omani values, fostering a sense of belonging, and raising public awareness among citizens, residents, and visitors about Oman, its history, heritage, and culture. It also aims to develop their creative and intellectual abilities, particularly in the areas of preserving artifacts and collections, and highlighting Oman’s cultural dimensions. This is achieved by employing and adopting the best practices and standards followed in the field of museum science.
The museum’s vision is to provide leadership for the museum industry in the Sultanate, achieving the desired qualitative shift for this sector.
All of this is embodied in: First: The museum display experience is distributed across 14 halls, containing more than 7,000 distinctive, carefully selected finds, and 33 digital interactive display systems. Second: It is the first museum in the Sultanate to include a learning center, equipped according to the highest international standards. Third: It is the first museum in the Sultanate to include facilities for preservation and preventive maintenance, and fully equipped laboratories. Fourth: It is the first museum in the Sultanate to include an audio-visual display hall, using UHD technology.
